Jason Statham made this movie! On his own, with no budget, no actors and no camera, while the studio hired henchmen to disrupt his set every day, and they never fed him, forcing him to eat his own body fat to survive. Don't believe me, then you can fuck right off, ya twats!

What's good about this is that McCarthy ISN'T a bumbling incompetent who keeps messing everything up (that's Statham's role, and he's hilarious). The movie's not ashamed of her and doesn't view her as mockable; she's actually a REALLY GOOD SPY, and that's where all the humor comes from. This is basically a BOURNE movie wherein Bourne is a plump, awkward middle-aged woman, and that's a great comic idea that works like gangbusters. I'd absolutely be down for a sequel.

At its best, Spy is pretty good light entertainment. McCarthy does her usual shtick, and it took me a while to get over her unending commentary. The film's saving grace however is Statham, who strikes gold every time he is on screen, and is the only character that left me wanting more; Byrne is a close second. Overall it's a fun, predictable movie with lots of laughs, but unfortunately does nothing to inspire confidence in Feig and McCarthy's upcoming Ghostbusters reboot.

Intentionally generically titled, Spy is a very funny movie that finally gives Melissa McCarthy a good movie to lead. This is Paul Feig's best and funniest movie to-date, and outside of a couple of misguided gags, is a riot throughout.

A CIA agent makes jokes about her weight, about her low self esteem, an Aryan specimen's gargantuan penis, her low self esteem some more, then finally about her low self esteem. Jason Statham acts batshit crazy, a helicopter explodes, and you've wasted 2+ hours of your life. The work put in by the film company's lawyers to secure the usage rights to a commonly used three-letter word for their title has got to be a story in itself--and one that was probably far more interesting than Spy.

It's not quite the espionage parody that I thought it would be but it does get points for its subversion of the genre's usual male-centricness. Spy is a hilarious, if inconsistent, blend of physical comedy and gleeful silliness and it's a great showcase for McCarthy's and Byrne's comedic talents. Oh and the men do fine work as well.

Over the top & campy. The worst moments were the ridiculous buffoonery of Jason Statham. A close 2nd was Melissa McCarthy who was not believable for a moment. Rose Byrne was quite amusing, as was Jude Law. Most of the jokes fell flat, but they kept tossing spaghetti against the wall to see what would stick, and not much did. It moved along one stupid pratfall after the next until the end. Not a complete waste of time, but very nearly so. Pathetic writing full of ridiculous humor.

This was supposed to be a McCarthy vehicle where we're supposed to make believe she's a super witty empowered woman agent of the people. Her comedy timing is strained and try hard. I suppose studio execs thought McCarthy should do as many pratfalls as possible to dazzle the proles. Can't get too much of that orange fat lady falling down, no sirree' bob. All the men seem to have a BBW fetish too. It all comes across as cheesy thinly veiled P.C. empowerment junk in film form. Feig kind of sucks.

Pretty funny. Most of the best laughs come from the witty banter and insults over the actual parody elements. That's kind of a bummer but I still recommend it. Statham is great as a parody of essentially every other movie character he has ever played.

A forgettable plot is saved by its fresh and funny characters that subvert the spy genre's typical line-up by poking fun at the alpha male (Statham's satire is gold-see his hilarious boat farewell) and putting the females at the forefront, with Byrne as the ridiculous villain and McCarthy (still with her usual arsenal of great vulgar one-liners) as the unassuming desk worker who's actually super smart and bad-ass. Surprisingly awesome action is also notable (see Susan's kitchen fight with Lia).

Ever since Bridesmaids, McCarthy's work has been disappointing. Here, she finally has a return to form. Statham is even better, and is the highlight of the movie. It's a solid summer comedy and is about a billion times better than its ad campaign would suggest. God, the marketing for this was terrible.

The best film to come out of the Melissa McCarthy/Paul Feig collaborations. About 80% of the jokes earn legitimate laughs. This is the first McCarthy vehicle in awhile that has the audience laughing with her rather than at her. It's all about her character putting the pretentious spies and villains in their place and embracing herself for who she is. McCarthy owns the film and has great chemistry with each of the supporting players. The action is predictable and takes a back seat to the comedy.

Melissa McCarthy proves supremely versatile and consistently hilarious, but the script proves less steady-waffling between crude insults (to characters and audience) and comedy gold. No human being leaving the cinema will think Melissa McCarthy is anything less than talented and gorgeous, so it is unfortunate that not a single (non-perverted) on-screen character can communicate a similar sentiment.

Successful at both the action and comedy portions of the movie, so it's an enjoyable time overall. Feig occasionally lapses into a more comfortable broad and/or awkward brand of comedy, but it does a good job nonetheless. In a nice turn, McCarthy is shockingly competent and Statham is shockingly less so, as both play out of type to the benefit of the film. Sadly it's not the best spy parody of the year as long as Kingsman exists, but both are better than almost all other entries in the genre.

With the massive amount of praise this has received, you can imagine my disappointment when this turned out being as painfully unfunny as I had expected. Features a barrage of overused gags, only with the added burden of Melissa McCarthy's irritating mannerisms. It tries so hard to be this fresh, funny and feminist action story, which is really quite admirable, but unfortunately no one involved has the talent to justify the ambition.

I've always been one of those people who feel that the masses are too harsh when it comes to Melissa McCarthy. Spy exceeded my expectations. There were numerous instances that had me laughing really hard. I felt the action and the comedy blended in very well. The plot was totally acceptable. My only complaint is that the running time could have been shaved by at least 20 minutes. Some scenes had dialogue that rambled on far too long. In the end, Spy is a lot of fun. I had my reservations going in, as I felt that this would just be another "Melissa McCarthy goes too far with it" comedy. Not the case at all. This is, actually, solid all the way around. Everybody's good, the story is good, McCarthy plays it very restrained early on, and even when they take the reigns off of McCarthy's character and let her run with it, it never pushed over that boundary of "too much". Feig might just be one of the more underrated writer-directors in the action-comedy genre.

Because Melissa McCarthy has such a great comedic presence, as well as being just a great actress overall, the film rests comfortably on her shoulders. She, and Feig's intentional focus on her, is what makes the film so enjoyable. That and it's rated R, and people underestimate how much funnier things can be when you're allowed to be a little more provocative. The supporting cast has fun, too, especially a bug-eyed Statham.

Fine spy parody/gross-out comedy that leads its way to really connect with Melissa's talent. Some gags and situations: Statham in a comic role looks great, every dialogue involving Melissa trying to be rude is also cool, that terrorist that used his camera to photograph his dick is also hilarious, and the ridiculous, clichèd covers handed to Melissa are awesome. A much better parody than anyone would have ever thought. It works extremely well as both a comedy and a full fledged spy movie. Just an expert display of quick wit and back and forth repartee. My only complaint (and this is very minor) would be that despite how funny McCarthy and her character are they don't ever step back and develop the other characters that much. Doing so would have given everything a chance to breathe, and really be its own moment before rushing on to the next joke.

Spy's biggest misstep is definitely its inordinately long run-time. At an utterly unnecessary 130 minutes, a good half-hour or so could easily have been chopped to make the whole production a tighter, more consistently amusing piece. As it stands it's a hit-and-miss, disappointingly unoriginal secret agent spoof notable for putting the boys in the backround: another spot-on performance from Rose Byrne, yet only featuring angry, sweary McCarthy for its final third.
