The documentary's nothing special, but it captures the essence and soul of the music produced by the Funk Brothers, and pleasanlty introduces you to the works of Motown, especially if you're uneducated about it. Plus some songs with the cover artists are really top notch.

Would've been much much better without the reunion concert footage; also of course it would've been nice if they could've talked to more of the singers (only Martha Reeves was willing/available to do this movie?...I guess the Funk Bros' life in the shadows continues). The reenactments were by and large on the hokey side. Then there was the occasionally pompous narration (you could tell Paulette Williams was out to win a Pulitzer or something). I would've greatly preferred a straight documentary.

They could do more with the subject material. I didn't feel like I'd learned very much at all. I didn't like the non-interview stuff... the performances, the narration, and the re-enactments. They should just let these old guys tell their stories.
