Summary: Based on the story of Dorothy Stratten, 1980 Playmate of the Year, Star 80 explores a brief and tragic career that was engineered by Stratten's loutish husband and manager, Paul Snider. Shunned by the rich and powerful people who court his beautiful, ingenuous wife, Snider makes her first the beneficiary and then the victim of his own ambition. (imdb)

I was left with a distinct feeling of "what's the point?" Yes, the story was tragic, but so are the 90-second tragedy blurbs we see on the local news every night. This movie felt like one of those stretched out to 2 hours. There just wasn't enough substance to make me care.

This is a pretty creepy movie featuring a wonderful performance by Eric Roberts as the bucket-of-extra-creepy Paul Snider, mentor and murderer of the unfortunate Dorothy Stratten (ably played by Mariel Hemingway). Cliff Robertson is good as Hefner and Fosse's direction still shows flashes of brilliance.

Way too simplistic and pointless for my taste; okay, we have an ambitious small-timer who then becomes obsessive and eventually murderous when his woman/meal ticket gets taken away from him. What's the point? What's the conceit or interest? I don't buy that Stratten was such an angelic sweetheart either, especially given her porn career and affair with Bogdanovich. A fine performance by Roberts, and the direction is decent enough, but the story and characters are severely lacking.
