For a non-Trekkie like myself, this is a pretty disposable load of fun. Some of the action sequences are top-notch, although some of the later ones are far too shaky for no good reason. And the visual effects are just the definition of awesome (yet another Oscar snub perpetrated by that fucking blue man group movie).
To all the Star Trek fans I bring a message: ha ha ha ha! It is just like Star Wars just dressed off interesting and funny things Star Wars had and put in a shiny new clothes. It is so full of stupidity one cannot imagine it is possible to put that much in one movie. You have to give credit for that! Now imagine the franchise that is more than 40 years old - you would expect something from that, and now all good you get is references and Quinto. And there was time travelling. Didn't help though.
I actually quite liked it, and I'm not a Trek fan. But I did think it was very Hollywoodized and the lens light flashies were over-used and they were annoying. The effects were beautiful, the explosions were pretty cool and Spock's a hawtie. I'm glad I had a Trek-fan sitting next to me, sometimes explaining stuff, so I understood more things that weren't explained in the movie
"This Star Trek essentially turns out to be a war film, with the occasional philosophical timeout to discuss love, friendship, and duty until the next bone-crunching fistfight or multi-weapon rumble with the Romulans." - Bill Weber
I had never been exposed to Star Trek in any form but I truly enjoyed this film. Strong cast (Zachary Quinto & Chris Pine especially impressive), exciting action sequences and tight pacing throughout. JJ Abrams seems to rehash this time travel/alternate universe concept quite often (Fringe, Lost, Felicity) but it enables artistic liberties that ensures the franchise is fresh and relevant for a generation of new fans. Solid popcorn movie that leaves you wanting more.
The first ten minutes of this movie are the best Trek movie I've ever seen. The rest...is OK. The comedic moments are my favourite - which is just wrong to say about a Trek movie.
