When I was a kid, there was no better story as far as I was concerned. So I don't think I'll ever be able to judge these films impartially. Trying my hardest, I think they're actually pretty good. But then maybe in twenty years time somebody will be saying that about Avatar, so you never know...
Ironically launching an empire of its own, STAR WARS is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, a fact some people are all too happy to forget. This is the story of the little b-picture that could, a triumph of visual and audible breakthroughs in movie-making, and a film to remind an entire generation, that going to the cinema was originally meant to be fun. Whilst Jean Luc-Picard wows to bodly go where no man has gone before, this was the movie that actually did it.
One of the first real films and definately sci fi films I remember seeing as part of that second generation. Episode IV tells its own story and could almost stand solo, but it is of course the first part of what would be an epic saga. Slightly humbler I think than what would follow, the Special Effects still stand up which is what has given it the staying power done the old fashioned way with models rather than CGI. Even though this isn't one of my favourite Episodes, it is still awesome.
