Summary: A romantic comedy set in the mid-eighties about a working-class kid struggling to make his way in the rarefied world of an upper-class British university, Starter for 10 is a bittersweet tale about loyalty, class, falling in love and the difference between knowledge and wisdom. (Picturehouse)
Quite good, for a British comedy. Nice 80s decor and use of locations. Suitable soundtrack. Ok casting. I didn't love the acting or dialogue, and all in all the story was a pale shadow of the book, but it did have its heart in the right place. Seemed to bypass much of the cheesy casting and in-jokes which have become a staple of the British film industry.
There are a few funny moments scattered throughout, and the entire game show sequence is pretty amusing. Other than that, it's just one big gimmicky John Hughes cliche.
Fairly fun little movie, especially good if you like James McAvoy. Surprisingly touching parts about how a person is changed forever once he leaves home.
Cheered me up quite a lot watching it with the flu. Certainly has its moments. Not exactly breathtaking but a reasonably good yarn if a little predictable. Biggest disappointment for me was that I went to Bristol Uni and I didn't recognise most of the places supposedly on campus in the film.
I enjoyed but thought there would be the sporting underdog triumph bit before the romantic conclusion. And if you think it's a spoiler that the guy ends up with the girl then please pay more attention.
