Summary: In Uruguay in the early 1970s, an official of the US Agency for International Development (a group used as a front for training foreign police in counterinsurgency methods) is kidnapped by a group of urban guerillas. Using his interrogation as a backdrop, the film explores the often brutal consequences of the struggle between Uruguay's government and the leftist Tupamaro guerillas. (imdb)

As a film, it's built in the Costa-Gavras style of Z, but this time he tends to romanticize some elements. Borrowing some words from the AMG Movie guide: "Despite its up-to-date radicalism, State of Siege adheres to time-honored Hollywood formula, with ugly, vulgar bad guys vs. handsome, articulate good guys."

Not quite as good as Z but it is an incredible film from Costa-Gravas, who can make intensely political films be incredibly suspenseful and fun.

Costa-Gavras' talent is apparent, and it's pretty gripping throughout, but it just doesn't work as well as it should. Generally speaking an above average film, but by Costa-Gavras standards it's a miss.
