Ostensibly about a young Catholic learning about Jewish faith, the film has nothing meaningful to say about it, w/ Jews serving almost entirely as sounding boards 4 the Catholics, who r represented by more stereotypes than u can shake 8 children at. Aidan Quinn as the boy's father rings the most true, a welcome purge from an intermittently genuine, somewhat cloying & sanitized "memoir" that's 2 often forced 2 rely on child actors - one of whom seems 2 inexperienced 4 a major motion picture.
