A great piece of Oedipal drama. It's emotionally distanced, but that just allows increased focus on the psychology of the characters, mixing this in with all sorts of dream sequences, flashbacks and strange symmetries. Add to this beautiful, elegant images and you have a beguiling film, a melodrama which is so downplayed that it feels more like a gentle stroll.
