Summary: In Rod Lurie's remake of the controversial 1971 Sam Peckinpah drama, screenwriter David Sumner (James Marsden) relocates with his wife, Amy (Kate Bosworth), to her Mississippi hometown. But as detachment strains their marriage, bigger threats loom in their small town. To Amy's chagrin, David attempts to befriend the locals, including Amy's ex-boyfriend, Charlie (Alexander Skarsgård). But resentments re-emerge and tensions rise to an explosive end.

When I first saw the original I thought it was a cool story about a guy that rises to the task when his house is attacked. I missed all of the subtext. All of it. The guy that wrote the script for this remake did the same thing. My excuse is I was a teenager, and not planning to invest millions behind a project based on my misunderstandings.

Despite being a rung below the original masterpiece (one of my personal favorites), Lurie's remake still succeeds in disturbing the modern Western concepts of ethics, home, belonging and masculinity all the while pushing the right buttons at the right time. Rather than a good film in it's own right, this remake is a testament to the structure, weight and timing of the original. Still: Please don't watch this without watching Peckinpah's masterclass.

I agree with OkkCoCa, the location change is what hurts this most. It becomes a cliched southern stereotype where the escalation level seems to make no sense.

Better than I expected to be honest. It kind of misses the point of the original but on its own it's watchable and even enjoyable.

follows the original fairly well, but marsden isn't the hoff and a bunch of southern hicks don't fill the shoes of those weird english hicks in the orignal. the sole reason here that this isn't as good as the original is because no matter how moronic or violent southern hicks get i'm never surprised.

Horribly misjudged! The change of location to the US is an immediate disaster. One of the things that's great about the original is the threat of the unknown & different! We've all seen crazy Hillbilly nutjobs on screen before, & we know exactly what their lazy movie stereotype requires them to do... kill liberals & hippies. The West Country loons from the original are much more fun! The far too buff Woods is horrendously miscast also, & simply isn't believable as a feeble pussy. Crap.

After an hour of goofy moralizing, a liberal dweeb and his hot wife get besieged by a gang of murderous Confederate yokels and kill them. This remake excises most of the controversial (read: intelligent and thought-provoking) bits from the original film, but still provides some enjoyably visceral action and nerd wish fulfillment. It's got decent acting from the two leads although the villains are kinda one dimensional. A solid effort, but nothing approaching the bleak vision of Peckinpah.

Nice attempt at remaking a masterpiece but it is lacking in nearly every aspect of what made that film great. The portrayal of people in the south was once again lazy as hell and completely unbelievable. You can't talk about good writing throughout a movie then do the most stereotypical character arcs ever, it's just stupid. The acting wasn't bad but Cyclops isn't nearly as compelling as Dustin Hoffman. Not terrible but unnecessary.

Pretty note-for-note as remakes go, though Hoffman fared way better than Marsden does, and Peckinpah managed to convey a much more painful, cogent message about masculinity/manliness in all its various incarnations, good and bad. The trouble here's that Marsden's kinda plainly a dick to those townspeople, and there's never any real sense that Bosworth's character truly resents him because he ain't a manly man. Still a world-class button pusher, though. And Bosworth's hot.

A remake of a great film that is remarkably, admirably close to the original in quality and tone, but it misses some of the key moments and completely leaves out others. Overall the original is just better at what this movie is good at, but this one translates very well and has some very solid performances. I was pleasantly surprised by this blasphemous remake. Unfortunately I also saw the trailer for the remake of The Thing before this film. Oy
