Might be my favorite Borzage, an achingly beautiful film.

I had to split this into two sessions, which is something I don't like to do and it might have affected my enjoyment of the film. I thought the first half was great, but the second half was mostly unremarkable melodrama. The lead actress was consistently good.

There's a beautiful character in Angela that Gaynor personifies perfectly, and the experiments with sound added a lot to the romance, the pain, and the dreamy atmosphere of the city and circus; almost like a poem or a song. What really crushed me though was that abrupt turn to horror and back again at the end; devastating.

A wonderful technical achievement, it's one of the best produced silent films I've seen with some incredibly long, unbroken tracking shots. Janet Gaynor is as cute as a button and a fine actress, but this type of tragically sweet romantic drama is just not my bag. I can appreciate the obvious talent on display, though.
