Bleh. Murray's unflappable cool guy schtick gets tiresome quickly. I used to think Ramis was really funny in this, but watching it now I find that the constant bemused smirk on his face irritates me. As characters, both of them are far too perfect and too smug. The other characters are completely one-dimensional. The overall premise is flawed, and so are many of the ensuing events. Some funny moments, but overall it's too weak to enjoy, even in brain-off mode.

Watching this in close proximity to MASH really highlights the sophomoric effort at comedy that this picture brings about. Harold Ramis is so damn smug and annoying, really bringing nothing to the table while Bill Murray clowns around more successfully, making the film at least watchable. The funny bits are too sparse to merit its very loose plot, and the host of funny guys and good actors that it contains mostly turns in mediocre efforts, except for the always endearing Warren Oates.

There's really no question that this is a film that succeeds or fails due to Bill Murray, so your chances of liking the movie as a whole will probably depend on your feelings toward him as an actor and comedian.

Complete flat tire towards the end of the movie and it degenerates into sheer silliness without many real laughs, plus at that point I found it sort of annoying that Murray's character couldn't just not make a spectacle of himself at every opportunity. With that said, this a funny and entertaining 80s movie, all in all very enjoyable.

Stripes hasn't aged particularly well with jokes that trivialise rape, make light of America invading other nations, and is just dated in every other aspect. Were men really that overtly lecherous and creepy in the 80's or is it just played up for "comedy"? Murray & Ramis are good, even if their characters are somewhat unlikable. I was shocked to see a younger Larroquette with black hair. Young & Soles actually provide some of the better moments. Goofy film that is a love-letter to cheerleading.

Enjoyable comedy coasts on the appeal of its stars - Murray, Ramis and Candy are all in peak form, even if the comic chemistry between Murray and Ramis is utilised less than you would expect, and the film has aged better than others of its ilk, with Oates' excellent and believable performance as the crusty D.I. bringing a much needed dose of verisimilitude. Overlength (especially in the 'extended' version) and a choppy, episodic feel in the second half are detriments.

A real authentic 80's comedy with all the things you could expect. The uplifting music, boobies, terribly one-dimensional characters, jokes that are genuinely funny and some that just seem awkward. I think it starts out way more funny and interesting but loses its drive towards the end of the movie when the group goes to Germany. It loses steam and starts bumbling about, becoming a bit too zany for its own good. Those poor border guards made me laugh. Warren Oates was great as Sergeant Hulka.

I didn't find this screamingly funny to begin with, though I did dig the snarky, sarcastic, sardonic dialogue, which worked well with the plot and its commentary of what should be a serious institution not taking itself seriously. But this falls apart mid-way, with Murray and Reitman turning their schlubby oafs into sex gods (somehow), not to mention the woefully tiresome climax that's supposed to be rousing.

In a way, it's like a hangout movie - the joy of watching it comes from spending time with two cool, sarcastic guys like Bill Murray and Harold Ramis. Even if they didn't get up to any hijinks, it'd still be a fun movie. Actually, I'd prefer a movie that gives Murray and Ramis less to do; like The Jerk before it, Stripes sets up its main characters and then shoves them into a variety of strange and inconceivable scenarios, to decidedly less successful results.

Likeable for the most part, this offbeat comedy gives Full Metal Jacket the Airplane treatment (even if it does predate Kubrick's classic). The mildly absurdist satire in the opening scenes is delicious. There are more nice moments to come, but the film does have pacing issues and ends up too long. The supporting cast is as good as any other 80s film. While far from flawless, Murray's interpretation of spiky wit sows the seeds for the collaboration with Reitman that would make them both stars.

Stripes is a decent 80's comedy and features two hilarious performances from Bill Murray & Harold Ramis. The chemistry between the pair is absolute comedy gold and they carry the film together tremendously. There are several great debut performances also. The sing along marching and quotable one liners are all brilliant. Sadly I think the film runs out of steam by the time we get to the overly bombastic finale. But the opening scenes in NY are genius and the army training scenes are great also.

There's a scene in the first 10 minutes where John's girlfriend says she's leaving him because he has no direction in life. For the same reasons, I just couldn't get into 'Stripes'. There's an annoying smugness to it. There's very little purpose or consequence to anything that happens. Russell has a permanent grin on his face that doesn't add to the humor and John is arrogant and annoying. The first half had promise, but as they sing song after song, it goes from cute to irritating. Not fun.

This is such 'TV during holiday season' movie, it's incredible! Bunch of colorful characters is led by slacker acted by Murray, whose character is exactly the kind of guy who would watch a silly movie with Bill Murray and would find it hilarious. Animal House meets Police Academy in this very of-its-age early-80s comedy. Writer Ramis steals the show from Murray with his knowing witticisms, while Candy would've outdone them both with more screentime. Amusing first half gives way to more predictable fare as the gags (and plot) start dropping both in quality and relevance.

Stripes feels like a trial run for Ghostbusters, it's not a bad movie by itself but the supply lines established here would pay off in another 3 years. Murray is funny but feels too restrained, Ramis is fine but miscast, the supporting cast is solid but unspectacular, the comedic setup is fine but not great, and the lack of a solid plot means it loses momentum by the end. It's hard to fully complain because the end result is solid and you could do much worse for an 80's comedy.
