One of the great (if a tad under-appreciated in comparison) 80s comedies. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and the late John Candy are all great in this, though the film suffers a bit from an unnecessary last act.

There's a scene in the first 10 minutes where John's girlfriend says she's leaving him because he has no direction in life. For the same reasons, I just couldn't get into 'Stripes'. There's an annoying smugness to it. There's very little purpose or consequence to anything that happens. Russell has a permanent grin on his face that doesn't add to the humor and John is arrogant and annoying. The first half had promise, but as they sing song after song, it goes from cute to irritating. Not fun.

Animal House meets Police Academy in this very of-its-age early-80s comedy. Writer Ramis steals the show from Murray with his knowing witticisms, while Candy would've outdone them both with more screentime. Amusing first half gives way to more predictable fare as the gags (and plot) start dropping both in quality and relevance.

Complete flat tire towards the end of the movie and it degenerates into sheer silliness without many real laughs, plus at that point I found it sort of annoying that Murray's character couldn't just not make a spectacle of himself at every opportunity. With that said, this a funny and entertaining 80s movie, all in all very enjoyable.

The structure of the movie is so uneven that it makes it seem like two separate films, with both halves being equally undeserving of being considered classic.

The first half of this movie is on par with everything else Murray did in this era, and Ramis is great in the sidekick role. It's all downhill once they leave the camp, though.
