Beautiful and heartbreaking movie about family and the tension between ideals and the harsh realities of life. At times it's a bit heavy handed but on the whole it's rather splendid and does have quite a bit of nuance.

It reminds me of Satyajit Ray's "Pather Panchali" - similar mood and hard coping with life by main characters. I can clearly see some interesting things going on here, but that's just not my kind of cinema.

I love these quiet, beautiful Indian melodramas. I don't quite know what happened over there in Bollywood but this type of film is lost forever, it seems.

Truly an outstanding film. It deals with the India/Bangladesh division, but also touches on modern ambition and caste prejudice, as these factors come together to create a rather Shakespearan tragedy. Again, the use of sound and music is astonishing, often blending from one scene to the next, occuring as an audio flashback, or somehow heightened or distorted. And the songs are quite beautiful, as is the cinematography. Besides a little clunky acting, I can't find anything to complain about.
