Summary: Silent as a painting, the movie shows us day-dreamer Hermie and his friends Oscy and Benjie spending the summer of '42 on an US island with their parents - rather unaffected by WWII. While Oscy's main worries are the when and how of getting laid, Hermie honestly falls in love with the older Dorothy, who's married to an army pilot. When her husband returns to the front, Hermie shyly approaches her. (imdb)

Never mind that the characters have become well-worn archetypes (the love-stricken main character contrasted with his merely horny best friend, not to mention the geeky prude). Summer of '42 is made with such quiet reserve and underplayed just enough so that it comes off in the most sincere way. It is full of warm and poignant nostalgia, while also managing to acknowledge the clumsiness of formative years with a good deal of humor. It ends with a sense not of something lost, but maturity gained.
