For a large part of the film it just seems like a mishmash of early 70's themes (financial crisis, unemployment, sexual liberation, leftist activism, etc) without much development. Towards the end, though, the themes about personal relationships emerge and some interesting stuff comes out. If you can take the meandering style there's some interesting stuff to examine, and the acting is really good.

Self-indulgent, arty, and trapped in the '60's, but featuring good performances from all and a very fine one from Finch.

The sort of thing I suspect I could never get away with writing as a spec script, because all the McKee disciples would scold me for not having enough character arcs or story beats or any of that crap. There *is* a plot -- just not much of one, and it's kind of beside the point anyway. It's never, ever dull; fine cast, handsome photography, and it may actually be better than it was back then because it's such a time capsule. Fascinating drama with a magnificent performance from Finch, and Jackson not far behind. Touching at times thanks to the performers, but characters are so emotionally closed off that it is hard to connect with them or fully appreciate what (if anything) the central love triangle means to them. Aggressive and assaultative sound design (especially in the first half) is very well handled, and melancholy direction permeates every scene with a distinct sadness.

A painfully realistic film about coping with knowledge that your lover will never love you the way you need them to. While I don't mind the slow pacing and the minimal plot, I could do without all of the rather pointless childhood flashbacks. I also wish they had cast a better actor than Head as the selfish lover but I suppose that only adds to unlikability of his character. Finch and Jackson are simply marvelous here, with Finch in particular delivering a subtle, heartbreaking performance.

Seems like an accurate representation of a 60s hang-over. A social worker in her 30s, a doctor, and the male sculptor whom they both profess to love deal with the consequences of free love. It turns out to be an ideal that only the sculptor is willing to embrace, leaving the others unhappy (though they say otherwise) because they cannot get over the idea of love equaling property. Also remarkable in depicting homosexuality not as some anguished struggle but as matter-of-fact.

Excellent acting and directing. Would have been a fantastic film if not for the horrible staleness and lack of entertainment in the story.
