Summary: After killing a child on a routine bombing mission in Vietnam, Pierre suffers from delayed stress and partial amnesia. Returning to France, he lives like a vegetable until he meets a young girl who has been dumped by her father at a boarding school. Posing as her father, Pierre contrives to meet the girl every Sunday, to play with her and perhaps recover his memory. The innocent friendship is misread by nearly everyone, even people who know Pierre well. A classic of old French art films. (imdb)

Really touching and bittersweet. It wouldn't hurt the film to have more depth, but the superficial nature meshes well with the weighty innocence of its lead characters, so it's not much of an issue.

The two main characters in this film inhabit such a tender and beautiful world that it is often easy to think of it as unrealistic, and yet those thoughts are the very reason why this film succeeds. It challenges preconceptions and makes you reconsider the innocence and joy available in life.

A platonic, less sensational "Lolita" (apart from the overboard ending). An alright movie altogether, but has flaws: The ending as I mentioned; it's pretty blunt, lacking in subtlety; some of the characters are flat, from the simply lovestruck Francoise to Carlos and his wife neatly divided on Pierre's relationship and resembling two "angles" more so than fleshed-out personas; perhaps detrimental of all is the lukewarm acting. Still it's a pleasant and engaging film to watch.
