Bloated epic composed of three films in one - a romance, a sports flick, and a political drama - each of which seems longer and more tiresome than the last. The conceit of having Fiennes play every generation of his family is a bad gimmick which makes each story feel more fake than the last. The script is disjointed, the politics go too deep and too realistic, and the film has a whiny Jew-centric tone. The director's ambition is impressive but most of the third act should have been cut.

This movie spans 3 generations and details some horrific Hungarian history before, during and after WWII. Ralph Fiennes plays the grandfather, the father and then son. A few great performances, but there is quite a lot of material here. It is highly political, mostly tragic, sometimes romantic, and presents many interesting historical perspectives. Engaging and mostly well acted but the 3 hour running time is long and exhausting.

The cowardice of generations and how to rise above it. A literary achievement and political education. Sweeping yet concise.
