This is pretty light fare, but it's very funny and enjoyable, and the acting is excellent. I caught and appreciated the La Strada allusion, and I also enjoyed the occasional Rashomon-style "no, that's not how it happened" touches; I wish they'd put in more of those. I guess the whole idea of a "faux biopic" is kind of silly, but it works better than you might think.

Samantha Morton as Hattie the mute prompted a few funny bits, and was kind of the heart of this movie. I was less on board once she departed from the film. Sean Penn was pretty good as Emmet Ray, but the material that he had to work with was fairly shallow. Is it fair, with a few years of perspective, to start calling Woody Allen's 90s period the "Jazz Movie Era" or... some catchy name I can't think of? Nothing new here, but they're all second rate, and all of a similar ilk.

Penn's best performance

You got to have a fable for the sound and at least be interest in Emmet Ray.Otherwise youŽll be very bored. Allen's been panned by movie critics for almost a decade, yet they didn't realize how enjoyable and well-made this little gem is. Samantha Morton, playing the mute and dedicated young lady who is fascinated by our lowdown protagonist, steals the show with her heartbreaking Oscar-nominated performance.

Disappointing by Allen standards. Some parts are terrific while others are terrible. The Mockumentary part is completely ridiculous.

Tragically funny. Penn gives one of his best performances and Woody shows continual signs of change and growth as a writer/director. Cool movie, great music.

A brief but touching Woody Allen flick that ranks in his top 10.

Pretty fun movie

lol @ Sean Penn's fingering technique. This is seriously the worst example of an actor pretending to be an actual musician that I've ever seen.

This film connects for me like no other work of Allen's. The characters breathe (and the script lets them, for once), and Penn and Morton are both working at a level that transcends Penn's monologues to allow a complex, ambiguous relationship between two very stunted characters. At its heart this is kind of a love letter to folklore and music, one in which Woody, both as author and talking head, comes across as passionate and bearable. Ultimately funnier than his typical comic attempts.
