Everything was great; the performances, the action, the photography and scenery, the score and the pace. Not as heady as other films in the genre but definitely not a brainless film either.

My favorite Hideo Gosha flick, this jidaigeki presents us with a clear view of a man in desperation, trapped by circumstance and forced into action. Riveting stuff.

Excellent samurai drama that offers sharp criticism of the concept of blind loyalty. Especially notable for its superb score by Toshiaki Tsushima. The film is fast-paced and exciting, but I did get a little confused at times (I'm still not quite sure who Osen was).

"I'm a cornered and wounded beast. I can't afford to live by my conscience.". Short, effective samurai movie devoid of bushido and typical charismatic samurai cliches. Bestial nature of man.

It avoids flash and theatricality, instead relying on raw detail. It all takes place in a mountain-top forrest, which while beautiful is still unglamorous and sets the tone for the whole film. Everything and everyone looks rough, and it actually makes the world and the people in it very three-dimensional. Lots of nice photography and cool swordplay.

The plot is a little sluggish at times, but mostly it moves along fairly quickly and it's a very engaging story, especially effective in portraying its criticism of loyalty and revolution. The photography is really excellent, especially the wonderful nature shots with the tree-lined mountains in the background. And the swordplay is very nice as well.
