Summary: The film's soundtrack is an original musical composition produced with synthetic sound - through photographing unusual geometric shapes and running them through an optical sound head. The images are an artistic rendering of this soundtrack. (imdb)
I try to review movies based on whether it accomplishes what it sets out to do or not. That's a pretty decent way of rating things, and this certainly does accomplish what it sets out to do. It's neat for 1971 but now I feel like I'm watching Windows Media Player. I don't recommend it because I didn't like it, though yes, if this is what you want from a film, it will work for you.
Visualization of music. I'd like to see what happens when McLaren tries to make a 'Synchromy' out of REAL music, and not just some bleeps-composition, but the way it is it's still pretty trippy and interesting. Check out smalin's page on youtube if you liked this, I can stare at that stuff for hours.
Experimental cinema is often just a simple idea beaten to death without going beyond the concept to become something compelling. Here, there's just enough variation and development to make it fun. At times it looks and sounds like an Atari 2600 cartridge glitching out. This is one of the dumbest things you can say about a film, but I bet this would be neat on acid.
