huh.

I love Zulawski's style, doing nothing by half-measures with crazed camerawork, larger than life performances and demented, exaggerated psychology, but here it's not as consistently mesmerising as in some of his other films instead occasionally drifting into silliness. Zulawski often feels to me almost like he's throwing whatever pops into his head at the screen, but whereas elsewhere these elements coalesce, in this film a lot of the scenes just felt awkwardly placed or disruptive to the mood.
