For a first film this isn't so bad. A little bit dull at times, not very imaginative, the characters are stock and the animation merely adequate. And it's loaded with the typical mystical mumbo-jumbo and vague philosophical platitudes. But it still works as a fine fantasy adventure. Though the characters are a tad too familiar, the heroes are likeable and complex enough. The slow pace doesn't seem to hurt the plot development that much, and although I wasn't swept away, I was engaged enough.

Title should be Gedo Senki... and it has nothing common with Ursula's Le Guin series... it's like comparing Pope to Neo from Matrix. The film is total misunderstanding !

An epic Japanese telling of a western wizard book that looks beautiful. Weirdly non-Miyazaki.

I left the lights on, fiber-optic christmas tree, etc. Sat down with a cup of tea and watched this. Pleasant. Didn't make any sense. But pleasant.

Plenty here to enjoy despite many faults. There is no doubt that "Tales from Earthsea" lacks a coherent core, with the main plot messy and several of the character relationships shallow. Probably worst of all is just how clumsy and heavy handed this movie presents it moral messages. Even so it's so god damn pretty in places and there were several scenes I loved. The villian was boss too! Riddled with problems, but worth a go. There is no doubt Goro has some way to go to match his genius father!

A gorgeously-animated and beautifully styled setting kept this film a constant joy to watch and take in even when the plot and characters left something to be desired.

The musical score in this film is absolutely jaw-dropping, the artwork in the backgrounds looks astonishing, the atmosphere is great. Unfortunately the story was quite lacking, the villain just made no sense to me and there was a really silly and unexplained plot twist at the end. Also whereas the backgrounds are fantastic, the character models and animation were pretty average. Still the movie was worth a watch just for the art and music.

worst Ghibli film

The ending on this movie really makes no sense. I wont spoil it here.. but it really hurt my score for this movie. The animation is certainly the best thing about this movie, but that's not saying a lot. Also, the voice over they chose for "Cob" was really a mistake.

Worse than the worst of (father) Miyazaki&Ghibli oeuvre and source material Earthsea Trilogy. Simply it has no front to pull any punches.

I can't help loving the atmosphere but story is so weak that it breaks my heart to see "Tales from Earthsea" title on it.

The art, animation and sound are outstanding, but it cannot helps the lack of story. I am very sad of it.

The story and the main animation are really weak. Lots of points for background artsts. The only good animation was during the ending fight. Ghibli suppoused to stick with Hayao Miyazaki; the skills did not inherit from father to son.

Too much farming, not enough magic and dragons. Good animation in some parts (backgrounds particularly), but the people are sort of blah.

Confusing, and completely mutilated a book I love!
