One of the reviews on here describes Almodovar as "the Bergman of Spain". This is the first movie I've seen by him, but I like the comparison. Funny (the film within a film was one of the most hysterical things I've seen in ages) but also incredibly dark and thought-provoking.

With melodrama, it's all or nothing. Here, we have gut-renching hits mixed in with pulled punches; the result is dissatisfaction. Almodovar knows his characters well, but he sprinkles their very real troubles with fanciful romance and idealism. We want to connect, but we can't get close enough. The haunting score, meticulous editing, and parallel plots can't close that distance; it's a problem inherent to Almadovar's method. Hold back or go for the kill; don't leave us searching for a way in.
