Summary: In the mid-to-late 1960's, in Washington, D.C., vibrant soul music and exploding social consciousness were combining to unique and powerful effect. It was the place and time for Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene Jr. to fully express himself - sometimes to outrageous effect - and "tell it like it is." With the support of his irrepressible and tempestuous girlfriend Vernell, the newly minted ex-con talks his way into an on-air radio gig... (imdb)

Really cool! I didn't even know about this guy and I from the DC area. Wish I was a listener when he was on.

Wake Up. Godammit!! Especially if you're one of the many who, tragically, hasn't seen this film. The admirable story of "Petey" Greene and Dewey Hughes is portrayed with pure, honest compassion - never being afraid to show fault. Set in a volatile era of our history, the emotional undertones and benchmarks are whole-heartedly felt throughout. In fact, it's Cheadle's display of Greene's own personal struggle which so closely mirrors that of the people that will keep his story in our hearts.

This is a good movie with a great performance by Don Cheadle. It had potential to be a great movie but it slows down in the final third of the film. But the performance by Cheadle makes the movie decent.

'Every stereotype has truth,' says Don Cheadle as Petey Greene. That fallacy ruins Talk to Me.

"Lemmons tells her based-on-real-life tale with enough enthusiasm to partially obscure both the clichés lining her plot's path as well as her cursory address of the roiling social unrest gripping the country." - Nick Schager

An underrated and touching film about Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene and how he turned his life around from ex-con to entertainer and proponent for civil rights. Don Cheadle is fantastic as Petey Greene and has great chemistry with Chiwetel Ejiofor, who has not yet acheived the kind of recognition he deserves.

Don Cheadle can act. Now that that's out of the way...
This movie could have good, but was so slow and absorbed none of the funk it with which it surrounded itself.

The third feature from Kasi Lemmons follows a pretty familiar rise-and-fall trajectory. The script may be fairly simplistic, but Lemmons has a fine touch with the camera, letting scenes build and getting the most out of any given moment. The film falters in the second half when the focus shifts from the radio show. Don Cheadle's performance is great character work, draped in 70's-era clothing that can sear retinas, but infused with intelligent respect for the inner conflicts that shaped the man.

Talk to Me's greatest strength is its refusal to make the cliche rise-and-fall story any more cliche then necessary. This gives room for the brilliant performances but it also leaves the narrative feeling a little inconsistent. As a fan of the actors and an "alright" execution, its still worth checking out.
