Summary: Based on the British cult comic-strip, our tank-riding anti-heroine fights a mega-corporation, which controls the world's water supply. (imdb)
A muddled attempt to transfer the British comic strip by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett to the screen. It is all flash and no substance or narrative, lacking in imagination and presenting a future that is more familiar than most pasts; brief cartoon interludes suggest that an animated approach might have been more successful.
It's a great movie for drinking and background, as the integration of comic scenes and action is enjoyable, but the movie is more eye candy than actual story. I suspect the comic is much more interesting and less of a punk-lite photoshoot.
Kinda cool but weighed down by crap effects, limited and choppy action scenes, goofy looking 'rippers', and of course Ice T. Still fun and oddball, plus the script is pure trash-camp gold!!
Oh poor Malcom McDowell, has the divine genius who played Alex in "A Clockwork Orange" really been reduced to this?! The film is imbecilic, and to its credit, tries to play many scenes off as comedy. However, the serious scenes are still completely moronic and eye-rolling, and any attempts at humor bomb as poorly as a duo of Carrot Top and Kathy Griffin. Many "funny scenes" simply make me cringe and feel deep shame for everyone associated with this crap, especially poor McDowell. Total shit.
This flashy film version of the Martin-Hewlett comic character really tanked at the B.O. but it's not that bad. The direction of Talalay (_Freddy's Dead_, _Ghost in the Machine_) lacks the light touch this sort of thing requires but the cast does its best to hold your interest. Favorite exchange: McDowell: "How does it feel knowing you're about to die?" Petty: "You tell me!"
I've haven't read the comics and probably never will, but this movie on its own merits is terribly. While it does build up to a somewhat moody atmosphere which could have worked, the problem is that it decides to be too wacky stupid, annoying and unfunny in every conceivable way. Because of this, you realize how utterly stupid and non-sensical the plot is which leads it to be even worse.
Should be terrible, but it doesn't take itself at all seriously and this makes it quite enjoyable. Downright silly in places and Malcolm McDowell is hamming his socks off. I've no idea how it compares to the comic.
