Big period war movie surrounding a romeo-and-juliet-style romance. Entirely formulaic and highly contrived, and rife with images of bare-chested Cossacks playing together which gives it an unintended homosexual air.

It's a very good movie adaptated from a brilliant novel. Nikolai Gogol makes some political and cultural suggestions. Cossacks, war and among them, there is a beautiful love story.
