Manages to find it's way between emotional and informative. Crimes of the imperial America are put on the platter. Problem is, that movies like this doesn't really change anything. I know it didn't change my perspective. Hopefully history will make everything right.

Like Charles Ferguson's No End in Sight from the same year, Gibney's film isn't especially inventive, nor does it reveal much information that wasn't already available to anyone who was paying proper attention. It does bring all of the material together in a cogent, forceful manner, presenting it without embellishment, letting the near unbearable facts stand on their own, confident that they are enough to leave the viewer appalled and angry. That alone is worthy of praise and gratitude.

This got the Oscar? It's topical, I guess. It's a well made investigative piece, but it's not a great documentary. It doesn't transcend as great documentaries do. I watched it today I can already say it didn't stick with me. Surely there was a better documentary made that year.

Well-made doc looking into the United States' overuse of torture and illegal imprisonment during the Dubya administration and how it led to the death of a completely innocent man turned over to their forces in Afghanistan. Interviews with some of the soldiers convicted will split audience sympathies, although their "We were told to do it" excuses pale in comparison to some of the guff coming from the top brass. When a piece brings out so much anger in the viewer you know it has to be good.

Fascinating and disgusting at the same time. Those poor bastards in Gitmo are finally starting to get trials as of now (9/25/08), but what we have going on is still state torture with (too much) consent of the governed. The Harding and Grant administrations sucked, but Shrub's makes them look good; we Americans will remember George W. Bush as the worst president in history for decades, if not centuries

Informative? Yes. Entertaining? Not in the least. They'll be showing this to high school seniors in history class a few decades from now, but I can't imagine our current generation finding this appealing with Bush's term having already soured our taste for war and more specifically, torture.

Very sobering look at America forces' use of of torture to obtain intelligence from detainees. Pretty informative, I suppose, but it is rather dry which is something that most documentaries fall victim to.

Instead of examining the whole war on terror, they analyze the oppressive interrogation techniques against detainees which quickly evolved into what some people might call torture practices or criminal acts (but not as bad as the Holocaust). It seemed to keep me more interested than "No End in Sight" (also a good documentary), once again due to the use of re-enactments and effective music. "Taxi to the Dark Side" is a great documentary.

Excellent documentary on one of the vital political topics of our day--how the US means to relate to the rest of the world. Treat people with respect and human dignity and listen to the soldiers on the ground, or insist on relationships with outsiders based in creative ways to administer pain? Gibney does an excellent job building his case, even if it is a little too consumed with the higher ups. A bit more pressure on the soldiers on the ground who perpetrated the most egregious acts would help

Absolutely disgusting, especially since this was condoned by the Bush administration, as recently released "tortured memos" prove (http://www.aclu.org/safefree/general/olc_memos.html). If you've ever doubted that the Bush administration was on a amoral and terrible slippery slope then this is it. If nothing else this is a prime example of George Bush deliberate misleading of the public with his born-again rhetoric, either that or he's just too ignorant. Either is unacceptable for a president.
