Point deductions for Raul Julia's insipid dialogue and several cringe-inducing musical numbers, otherwise it's very enjoyable. Cassavetes and Rowlands' performances are predictably both magnetic and flawless, and Sarandon is everything she's meant to be. The allegory only gets in your face at one point, and I enjoyed that scene very much even though it bordered on the ridiculous. Not a perfect film, but interesting.

A familiarity with Shakespeare's The Tempest might be a source of annoyance for purists, but the more licentious will probably be impressed at how facilely Mazursky makes the play adjust to, and disappear beneath, the mid-life crisis of a prosperous Manhattan architect.
