It's telling about the current state of U.S. politics and culture that Thanksgiving Prayer still resonates today, its indictment of discreetly overshadowed social calamities and obnoxiously sanitized patriotic practices so competently rendered on-screen as to function properly in pursuit of its purpose without allowing for detractors to play the un-American card. As ghost-directed by Van Sant, it's meaningful, embittered stuff - but might it not qualify as entertainment?
