i thought I would hate it but i actually liked it. The main character was interesting and the art bozo idol guy ended up being a creepy weirdo. It was fun but certainly artsy fartsy.

in a nutshell: a wanna-be-painter in high school (no friends, naturally) meets the It girl. she toys with him, he buys it. she runs off with his idol, he buys it. she comes back to be with him, he buys it. this movie does not translate any message. it is, simply, wrong.

It's impossible to buy the perky, preppy George as a brooding, suicidal, tortured artist type, so the film is stillborn even before you notice how cheesy and stupid the text is. Yeah, Emma Roberts is a babe though.

"If not for its lack of self-awareness, The Art of Getting By would seem to be a spoof of ennui-inflicted teen dramas." - Nick Schager

Isn't really a lot to write home about but I wouldn't go and say it's awful. I think what jhmclellan says is true, "movie is forgettable." It doesn't really do anything. It tries to tell a heart-warming story of love and I suppose it does, but the idea is kind of silly. The main character is kinda wonky. No real scenes stick out, and you know what's going to happen. We've seen it a million times, and we've seen it done better. But still not awful, just not worth seeing.

One of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. Predictable, pretentious, and completely forgettable. Perhaps the only redeeming feature is that Freddie Highmore is decent and puts on a very good American accent. Other than that, however, this just falls woefully flat.

Had the potential to be really good, but none of the characters were believable, and it just seemed to come up short in many regards.
