Summary: Christine Penmark seems to have it all: a lovely home, a loving husband and the most "perfect" daughter in the world. But since childhood, Christine has suffered from the most terrible recurring nightmare. And her "perfect" daughter's accomplishments include lying, theft and possibly much, much worse. Only Christine knows the truth about her daughter and only Christine's father knows the truth about her nightmare. (imdb)

First off: that ending. It was fun to watch, and the way the mother eventually "handled" the situation was shocking, especially for the day in which this film was made. But really: that ending. And the girl could have been a little more creepy.

A pretty creepy movie with some fun campy aspects and strong performances, hampered by a ridiculous ending. Well worth a look, though.

Patty McCormack is the original evil little girl. "The Bad Seed" is about a wicked little girl. The story is cool and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Some people have criticized it for overacting, but that's merely because it is set up like a stage show. Patty McCormack plays a great Rhoda Penmark. The ending is a cop-out, though, but that's because of studio censoring. Just pretend that the ending "wharf" scene is not in it, because that's not how the original author intended it.

This was based on a stage play and it shows. Its theatricality and lackluster direction are downright oppressive. Still, this 1950s handling of an eight-year old sociopath is probably required viewing.

Over-the-top silly, but *everybody* is so screwed up that it's *wonderful* to watch. Patty McCormack plays the most evil little girl ever, but she's so blonde, so pigtailed, so singsongy I want to pat her on the head and go, "Aww, go to your room you little murderous evil brat." Leroy and her interaction with him are also twisted & great.

It definitely drags in the middle third, but the all around perfect performances - especially by young Patty McCormack - make up for it. Quite a chilling, entertaining movie.

Eileen Heckart stole the show as the bereft "Mrs.Daigle"; the characters "Monica" and "LeRoy" were great. If you read "Without Conscience" by Robert Hare or "The Sociopath Nextdoor" by Martha Stout, you will have a nicely rounded understanding of the film.A modern flick along this line is "The Good Son".
