Summary: Denys Arcand revisits the situations and relationships that informed his international breakthrough "The Decline of the American Empire." Set 17 years after Decline, this film, like its predecessor, examines the varying politics - economic, personal and sexual - at play among a group of friends, lovers and ex-spouses.
Better than Decline in that the look at life, death and strained relationships is well done, if underdeveloped, and provides a compelling narrative. The social commentary is still a disaster, unable to really explore anything and muddling criticisms, with a heavy handedness that actually makes it easier to dismiss because it's so ineffective and scattershot. Rich guy buys everything, liberal system is complicit, corruption abounds. It's a useless background to a possibly interesting human drama.
"Privileged audiences that swooned for Decline of the American Empire should expect more of the same oh-so-witty jibber-jabber and specious political "noise" exchanged between Arcand's motley intellectuals." - Ed Gonzalez
This is an excellent film which is very well made by the director Denys Arcand. The cast is excellent and the script if full of many funny and dramatic moments. The story is not predictable it shows the importance of family and friends.
Funnier than the first, this one might be sometimes too politically concerned, but it's filled with the most intelligent social commentary about post-11/9 western society.
