What sets this film above others of this ilk is the great atmosphere and a good performance by Peter Lorre. The story is a little weak and could have been better developed.

A bit on the goofy side of the horror spectrum, but all in all not terrible. Lorre does his bugeyed, tense thang very well here, and is the main appeal of this lightweight campy spook story.

One of the few fright titles released during Hollywood's post-World War II horror drought, this benefits mightily from Lorre's typically intense, pop-eyed perf as an astrology-obsessed aide to ailing, semi-paralyzed pianist Francen. Florey's creepy atmospherics and disembodied-hand effects (several trick scenes feature the director's own digits!) plus an earnest cast fully compensate for the minor detail that not much actually happens.
