Summary: Father O'Malley the unconventional priest from 'Going My Way' continues his work for the Catholic Church. This time he is sent to St. Mary's, a run-down parochial school on the verge of condemnation. He and Sister Benedict work together in an attempt to save the school, though their differing methods often lead to good-natured disagreements. (imdb)

You've got to credit director Leo McCarey on this one. The screenplay is straight-up conventional sentimentality, but the realization is much more delicate and nuanced. Only the (studio decreed?) musical interludes hit the wrong note, as the sumblimated romance between Father O'Malley and Sister Benedict fuels this parable of rehabilitation. McCarey's long takes draw you in, and the framing in the conversations doesn't jackrabbit between shot/reverse-shot, but rather brings everyone together.

A little too heartwarming, but Ingrid Bergman and the natural acting of the little kids in the Christmas play make it work.

Just brimming with wholesomeness, a perfect little world where everyone is nice and everything works out in the end. It's enough sugar-coated fluff to choke you to death. And it's not even entertaining fluff. The characters are likeable, but it doesn't matter much when the entire cast is so perfect and good-natured. The situations are predictable and the songs are dull. I admit the movie is feel-good, but it doesn't work very hard to earn it.
