Jeff Bridges is the dude. You have to see this film.

I'll stand by my original argument: this is a movie that will only appeal by its level of familiarity, whereas the more you watch it the more you'll like it. My problem was that on the first viewing I saw nothing to compel me to watch it a second time. Maybe someday I will, but I'm in no hurry.

Jeff Bridges' low-key amble through life is hilarious to watch and listen to. John Goodman and I went to school in neighboring school districts at the same time. Amazingly, he is nothing at all like me. But his over-the-top right-wing antics in this movie are just crazy. You've seen people like him in the world around you. The kind you steer clear of in the express check-out line at Wal Mart, for example. It's a crazy, funny movie.

Along with Back to the Future, the most re-watchable movie ever made. Inexplicably ignored when first released, The Big Lebowski is now a cult sensation that is also, unfortunately, required viewing for frat douches everywhere. I don't know how in the world that happened.

It has memorable characters, great performances by Bridges, Buscemi, Goodman, and Turturro as "The Jesus", terrific quotes, and is one of the most rewatchable films ever...and yet, I can't call it more than "very good". It's just not as funny as the truly great comedies, (including the Coen's own "Burn after Reading") and is ultimately no more in terms of meaning than one cool, humorous, trippy scene after another. Really good, but not great.

Excellent road trip style movie, but without the actual road trip. Goodman is god, and Bridges is just the Dude.

The Coen brothers are here having fun with, among other things, complexity per se. Fun with the very idea of complexity. Fun with the concrete and mountainous evidence of complexity. And one of the richest sources of fun, played off in the sharpest contrast to complexity, is the glorious spectrum of stupidity on exhibit: the dope-addled but gropingly rational Dude (Bridges); the big lug who is always absolutely sure he is right in spite of the fact that he has never been right yet (Goodman), etc

Yeah, I'm that guy. But it's one of the few movies I can watch any time and never get tired of it.

Cool movie by the Coen brothers that is well acted and well written, it just has a pretty stupid plot that tries to reinvision The Big Sleep in a modern setting.

Dude, what a wacky trip!
