Summary: Set in England, rather than California, the story follows Raymond Chandler's book fairly closely otherwise. Philip Marlowe is asked by the elderly (and near death) General Sternwood to investigate an attempt at blackmail on one of his daughters. He soon finds that the attempt is half hearted at best and seems to be more connected with the disappearance of the other daughter's husband, Rusty Regan... (imdb)

A third-rate Chandler remake, out of its element in an English setting. Sarah Miles" vulpine sexuality, Joan Collins' predatory instincts, and Richard Boone's psychopathic glee are small compensations.

I count Hawks' 1946 version among my favorites. This is a disgrace. The actresses playing the Sternwood daughters are brutally bad and everything else is sickening inferior to the original as well.

It wasn't translated very well in place, and there's some strange casting (Jimmy Stewart as General Sternwood?). Mitchum is good, though.

Not as bad as its reputation, mainly because Mitchum returns as Marlowe, although director Winner does everything possible to undermine Mitchum's performance. Candy Clark is well-cast, too. But otherwise -- what a misguided and wrong-headed movie!
