Surprisingly touching film. The gentle pacing sets up an engaging atmosphere, although the film does get rather sappy.

I much preferred the first hour of the movie (which was very similar to Cast Away with the horse playing the Wilson role) to the second half, but a solid movie overall and a good lead performance from the kid.

"The Black Stallion" is a magical film with brilliant direction and camerawork. A joy to watch.

Fabulous movie...& not just for little ones, either. It plays more like an art film. Stunning cinematography. Mickey Rooney & Kelly Reno (the kid) are both wonderful. The horse is gorgeous, too. Deeply moving without being manipulative. You'll laugh...you'll cry.

Brilliant cinematography and amazing soundtrack. Seemed like an arthouse film, and I can now see why F.F. Coppola was executive producer. I loved the fact the dialogue was kept to a minimum, and the music dictated most of the innate conversations. For some reason, I really hated the kid's mom whenever she opened her mouth, it just grated against my ears.

The middle section of this film - in which a boy and an Arabian stallion are shipwrecked together on a desert island - is one of the best edited and most lyrical sequences in any film I have seen. These scenes define the film, and transform a film I would otherwise rate 80 into an 87.

A boy and horse save each other's lives, live an idyllic life on a remote island, and on returning to civilization find fresh triumph in racing. The story and characters are thin (though not inadequate), but Carroll Ballard's direction is so marvelously lyrical--matched perfectly by Caleb Deschanel's cinematography and Carmine Coppola's score--that both the early scenes on the island and the later scenes in civilization have a mysterious, fableish, Malick-esque quality. It's a captivating work.

I watched this when I was a little kid and I thought it was cool. (I was probably 8 y.o. or so when I saw it back then) Now, I don't know, I'd have to see it again to let you know.

Certain moments left quite an impression on this child's mind when viewed at the cinema at time of release. Perhaps deserves a higher score.
