Summary: Two Irish brothers accidentally killed mafia thugs. They turned themselves in and were released as heroes. They then see it as a calling by God and started knocking off mafia gang members one by one. Willem Dafoe plays the detective trying to figure out the killings, but the closer he was to catching the Irish brothers, the more he thinks the brothers are doing the right thing. (imdb) (by )
Uneven, with parts that are downright corny and silly, but overall, a damn good action film, with funny moments, memorable characters, and a hell of a performance by Willem Dafoe. Also, none of the bullshit exposition you see in a Tarantino film. Good stuff.
Ok I will give my tirade on this movie. Maybe I'm not irish, and that's part of it. Maybe I got tired of dopey action movies a while ago. Maybe I hate smug assholes that become vigilantes. I don't know exactly what it is, but this movie fell completely flat for me. I think people love this movie because it is a formulaic half-brained shoot-em-up but it still exudes indie cred (or does it even anymore?)
Wouldn't have rented based on synopsis, but damn likable characters... Intelligent and fun if you give it a chance. Dafoe is fricking hilariously campy!!!
Totally generic and devoid of anything worthwhile other than Dafoe's acting. I get the point of the movie, I just think it's really stupid and overdone to the point that it makes me vomit.
This movie doesn't deserve to be a cult classic. It's stupid, fascistic gun porn, but then again I expected that. What amazed me most about Boondock Saints was how boring it is. Too much of the movie is just people standing around shooting guns at each other without making us care at all. My biggest disappointment was Willem Dafoe, whose cop isn't the worst character in this movie only because Rocco is in it. It's a shitty Tarantino ripoff without any understanding of Tarantino's charm. Skip it.
Some things it did well, some other areas it faltered in. Slightly unique method of storytelling, but as someone who loves shootouts-- there wasn't enough fun in the shootouts.
The Irish actors are nice to watch. The premise is good. The plot and directing are below mediocre and who wants to see a gay Willem Dafoe? This film could've been so much more, but is ultimately a let down.
Instead of sticking to the rather entertaining Tarantino-y feel created in the first act of the movie, this film spirals into a ridiculous teenage day-dream, ruining every semblance of suspension of disbelief.
