Summary: Two Irish brothers accidentally killed mafia thugs. They turned themselves in and were released as heroes. They then see it as a calling by God and started knocking off mafia gang members one by one. Willem Dafoe plays the detective trying to figure out the killings, but the closer he was to catching the Irish brothers, the more he thinks the brothers are doing the right thing. (imdb)
This movie is one of a kind. It is a movie with its own style and well done. The movie has its own flaws but isnt the flaws of a diamond that gives its color. Dafoe delivers an amazing performance. Its a very entertaining movie overall, a bit on the side of violence. I am sure that there are detractors of this movie as there are fan base for it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
It's quite easy to imagine that kids who listen to Nickelback and have a wardrobe full of Tapout attire love this film. But in reality it is so incredibly stupid that it actually pissed me off. I'm not quite sure what to make of it; I see this on quite a few of people "Favorite Films" lists and it makes my head hurt. Troy Duffy has easily found his way into the category of worst directors all-time. There is blatant racism, homophobia, and is extremely, extremely pseudo-intellectual. Atrocious.
I probably wouldn't like it all that much today, but 10 years ago I really liked it. Also: to the people proudly claiming they hate this at every opportunity - OK, guy, you are getting just as annoying as the frat boys that made you hate this film in the first place.
The only reason this doesn't get a zero is because of Dafoe. Complete shit. Despite ripping off Scorsese and Tarantino, the only thing Duffy comes close to in entertainment is an exploding cat. Oh and lots of tedious slo-mo. What's even worse is at the end when he tries to present a "HURR VIGILANTISM IS A MORAL DILEMMA HURR" debate as if to justify the warped fascism that he just pissed all over us with.
This is one of those cult films that's been hyped by the internet so much but offers very little. The director has a fetish for everything Irish and there are preposterous scenes of the protagonists praying in a church before they go massacre boatloads of people. It's really a poor amateur effort that doesn't go beyond schlock and rips off Hong Kong liberally. The leads are presented as such "cool Irish dudes" that i'm sure that it creates automatic fan following in some parts of the U.S.
Uneven, with parts that are downright corny and silly, but overall, a damn good action film, with funny moments, memorable characters, and a hell of a performance by Willem Dafoe. Also, none of the bullshit exposition you see in a Tarantino film. Good stuff.
