It's a surprisingly honest and heartfelt portrayal of single fatherhood and the difficulties that come with it with phenomenal performances from Clive Owen and the actors that play his sons. So those should at least count for something. But it's really rather hit-or-miss at best. Among the things that do not work in this film, the imaginary conversations with the dead wife stands out as being the most unnecessary.

"Despite buoyant performances from its cast and an excellent score by Sigur Rós, cloying sentimentality is in heavy supply throughout Scott Hick's adaptation of Simon Carr's memoir." - Adam Keleman

Almost great film becomes a little too top heavy with plot in the last third, but this cannot erase the masterful first hour which intelligently observes the specific effects that grief (especially raw grief) can inflict upon a person. All performances are top-notch but Owen (never better) and little McAnulty are equally sublime, with McAnulty perfectly capturing the 'acting-out' of his character while never seeming bratty. First 20 minutes are especially devastating.

what's the point in making a drama movie with the it can't happen scenario, you can turn to sci-fi instead, raise your child this way and U can kiss him goodbye besides what did the mother do wrong for the older one in wanting to leave her. it's all the father's fault. nonsense .....

Two perfect child performances lift this mawkish drama up from a 50 something score.

This movie seemed like a very honest movie (it was like watching real life for an hour and a half, kinda like big brother, only real, not fabricated), let down by a trailer that suggested the movie would be better than it was. I wish I hadn't seen the trailer, it mighta made it a better movie overall.
