This is a grade-A snoozefest of a Western. It gallivants through the tropes of a revenge story with little flair or, dare I say, bravado (ho ho h...sorry). None of the characters do a whole lot to leap out of their one-dimensional cliches and the landscapes don't even look that intriguing. I hope Gregory Peck Westerns have better stuff to offer to the genre than this.

It says quite a bit that any depth and profundity makes it through direction so terribly uninspired. The script is, actually, incredibly good --- nay, brilliant: the moral bait and switch threatens to undermine the very ideal of the western, and the fact that the end seems Hollywood cookie-cutter (Peck gets a family, a girl, a hero label) twists the knife just that painful bit more. But the acting and camerawork were just plain painful.

Gregory Peck delivers a good performance in this 50's western about a good man seeking revenge for what happened to his wife. The direction is lackluster and really takes what could have been a really good film down a few notches.

Decent flick marred by heavy handed Christian moralizing.

A classic Western plot: Gregory Peck hunts down and kills members of a gang that raped and murdered his family. The most interesting thing about this film is the vengeful hero. Peck is portrayed unambiguously as a hero in the film, yet he murders in cold blood three members of the gang he pursues. However, there is a twist in the tale that is worth waiting for: it turns out this is a morality play, after all. (But Peck still gets away with murder, and remains a hero to all).
