Summary: A down-on-his-luck American Indian recently released from jail is offered the chance to "star" as the victim of a snuff film, the resulting pay of which could greatly help his poverty stricken family. (imdb)
Most people would probably not know about the feature film Johnny Depp directed. Having seen it, it is a misfire, but is fascinating for what he was attempting to do. Despite failing at its target, it is an attempt at showing the plight of Native Americans which tries its hardest to avoid the clichés of mainstream American cinema, from its atmospheric score by Iggy Pop to its unsettling central conceit. It doesn't work but Depp could have gone on to some great films if he continued directing.
The weirdest movie I've seen in a long time. Practically an anti-plot movie, with so many things just left unexplained. Still I liked the movie's style, the characters in it and all the weird small details. You should also know that this is a really slow movie and that Marlon Brando's name on the cover is totally misleading since he only appears for like two minutes.
Surprisingly enough, even though it was directed by everyone's favourite Johnny Depp, this film is rather obscure. And what a shame. Simple, powerful and haunting, \"The Brave\" is a masterpiece in many ways, clearly influenced by Jarmusch's \"Dead Man\". And featuring a brilliant soundtrack by Iggy Pop.
