Although affecting, this occasionally surreal narrative of schizophrenia fails to articulate itself properly and seems to tread too-familiar territory (e.g. family dynamics of alcoholism) all too often. The tacked-on ending nearly suggests that to the mentally ill, time in institutions is less real. Too few of the characters surpass the apparently enigmatic perception of the protagonist to speak for themselves.

The film brilliantly emphasises how monsters and maniacs are primarily the victims of circumstance. One gets the sense of a storm brewing when watching it, its succession of tragedies blends splendidly with nightmarish imagery and narrative clear-headedness to form a cinematic experience that's both wonderful to look at and coolly unnerving.

Francie: Are you dancin'? Girl: No. Francie: Well, why didn't you bring your knittin'? Classic.

A great story about how loneliness could drive you mad and the feeling of betrayal would make you vengeful. Francie's own travels to madness were well accompanied by the general nuclear paranoia of Cold War world and the superstitious rural Ireland. Neil Jordan is a great director in creating atmosphere and with a good script he brought out a cool movie.

Rather good. Takes a while before it gets going though.

I found it overstylized and a little too "clever", but it's a difficult film to shake off.

Itīs original in a few aspects and a good dark comedy, however the ending is weak.

The book is terrifying, and obviously better, but this film does a good job of portraying it.
