My lecturer put this on and said that besides some great set designs, he didn't want to to drain the students attention anymore as it was a dated classic like so many others... There is still enjoyment and many other things to appreciate. Just because there isn't something bright and new happening every 5 minutes doesn't make a film redundant.

I certainly like it a lot, especially the much famed sets, though I can't help but feel cheated by the ending. I might need to give this a second go but the prospect of praising a film to the hills for introducing a concept that is rarely used well, the surprise out of nowhere twist ending, seems a bit misguided.

Made me fall in love with German Expressionism. Its pace suffers when viewed from a modern perspective, but its set design has no-doubt inspired generations of filmmakers.

Not only is the film boring and slow, which can partially be forgiven given its age, but it doesn't make sense in parts. Why couldn't the three policemen two steps behind Cesare recover his body earlier? Why do they need to "test" Dr. Caligari in the asylum?

OMG OMG, it's the SOMNAMBULIST. OMG :O :O This film is a definitive example of the German Expressionist movement. Its influences on future directors such as Hitchcock, Burton, and Lynch are very apparent. The sets and atmosphere are really something. The film may seem a bit tedious at times and often creates a sense of dejavu, but these are not major detractions and perhaps even positively contribute to the overall effect.

This is one of two silent films (the other being La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc), that you can safely watch today, without getting that "dated" feeling. Simply an absolute masterpiece of German Expressionism. A perfect meeting between story, style and art form.

Great fun, always visually arresting, with one of the first double-twist endings in cinema history; maybe the first? As is often the case with silent films, Kino's restored print is the best.

Beautifully surreal. The second half isn't as gripping as the first until a delightfully twisted conclusion makes you rethink everything that came before. Caligari himself is wonderfully creepy and memorable.
