Summary: Cult legend Dario Argento's latest is a maniacal and cynical tale of a serial killer pinning the life of his captives on the outcome of a video poker game. (Two Boots Pioneer Theatre)
"Watching the online cards turn slowly (sometimes painfully so) in the film is to be reminded of how good Argento used to be when his aesthetic approach was less synthetic." - Ed Gonzalez
The plot was unoriginal and tacky, the acting was atrocious, and the style was non-existent. A huge miss for Argento. It's hard to believe this is the same guy who made Suspiria.
i know it's generic, it's not terribly well made, and next to Argento's '70s work it should be downright fucking heartbreaking, but what can I say? I actually really enjoyed it, in a cheesy Law and Order way.
Many have dismissed this as a terrible Argento film but for me it's actually a lot more enjoyable than some of his acclaimed work. Yes, its visually poor and acting and the script can be bad, but it feels more engaging; the fact that the plot idea is far more logical, even if it's ridiculous, and interesting than something like Tenebrae's is enough to give this film a high score. It's also got Liam Cunningham, who is still great as a stereotypical drunken and grizzled cop.
A huge disappointment from Dario Argento. No suspense, hardly any gore. There was one cool scene at the end when you see someone get run over by a train and you see what happens to the body.
no suspense at all, and boring as hell. the majority of the movie is the police waiting in between card games, which sucks, and when they actually playing the card games, that sucks too. it is funny though that the best thing argento can come up with thirty years after his golden age in film making is a killer that likes to play cards, that's got bland written all over it.
