A routine police investigation reveals a backstory worlds more complex than expected (especially from a police procedural). Unfortunately Nomura really overplays the last 40 minutes or so, turning it into more of a 2nd-rate soap opera and ending with a bizarre didactic coda. This movie has a lot to admire, but I can't understand the high esteem in which it is held among Japanese film fans.
