Despite having enough plot strands and tangents of interest, this never successfully works any of them by themselves or together. It's worth viewing for Lee Marvin's short yet scene stealing performance, but it feels disappointing considering how good it looks cinematically and its attempt to create a multiple chaptered and stranded John Wayne western.

Provides everything one could want in a sprawling widescreen western, without excelling in any department. The ending is rather abrupt.
