A sub-par Arthur Miller play gets turned into a sub-par film. Who knew.

A Hollywood, dumbed down version of an Arthur Miller play. The work is stripped of all the intelligence and emotion it originally had, resulting in a very plain film about a group of young girls that makes witch accusations, a city council that goes along with it for no clearly described reasons, and the inevitable conclusion...with no real twists, turns, or revelations along the way. It could have been better, but while Day Lewis is excellent, the rest disappoint, especially Winona Ryder.

This really shouldn't be so damn dull

Not even the magnificent Daniel Day-Lewis can save Hytner's terrible adaptation of the Arthur Miller play. This film should have been intelligent and dark; instead we're tortured over the terrible acting of Winona Ryder and a court room that goes off blind accusations from a group of young girls with no explanations in the process. And while I find the Salem witch trials quite interesting, this managed to deaden any curiosity I felt at the time. It's decent, but highly disappointing.

Strong acting, direction, and camerawork power The Crucible. The portrayal of the horror of the witch trials is very realistic, though probably not entirely historically accurate.

based on what is probably the best play i've ever read. not that i've read all that many, but still. interestingly enough i don't think it translates too well to the screen.

Don't remember much about it now other than that it was quite boring.

Drab and dull. I've never seen the play, but I have a feeling it's a lot more enveloping than this.
