Summary: An unlikely kind of friendship develops between Fergus, an Irish Republican Army volunteer, and Jody, a kidnapped British soldier lured into an IRA trap by Jude, another IRA member. When the hostage-taking ends up going horribly wrong, Fergus escapes and heads to London, where he seeks out Jody's lover, a hairdresser named Dil. Fergus adopts the name "Jimmy" and gets a job as a day laborer. He also starts seeing Dil, who knows nothing about Fergus' IRA background. But there are some things about Dil that Fergus doesn't know, either... (imdb)

I can appreciate at an intellectual level the complexity of the narrative and the characters. Also, the early portion of the film with Whitaker is well done prisoner drama. But the suspension of disbelief required for the latter portion of the film, both before and after the central twist, makes it difficult to appreciate where the film goes. Plus the only people who don't seem confused about their identities are those who blow people away in the street. Not really balanced characterizations.

First act: Great, develops very nicely. Second act: Really good. Third act: A bit messy and muddled and ultimately unsatisfying. If only they knew how to wrap up the romance, because as it is it feels like a silly and trite ending (I'm talking about everything from Dill's haircut onwards here) to what could have otherwise been quite a bold, confident film. The two leads are good enough to cope with the flimsy ending of the plot but I still left the film feeling quite let down by that third act.

It's no way near the same level of the director's Mona Lisa (1986), which shares similar threads to this despite their differences, but this is still a very good drama which uses genre tropes to create a great film. Like the older film, the prescience of the actors (especially of Stephen Rea and Jaye Davidson for the last three quarters of the film who have to drive the film's emotional core) are what makes the film work.

What begins as a thriller unexpectedly turns into a poignant and ironic love story, with plot twists that deepen the film's almost dreamlike power. Stunningly acted by Rea, Richardson, and Whitaker, with an amazing debut by Davidson, as Dil. A unique, seductive film that Jordan pulls off with poetic ease.

Very well-made human drama. I saw it the same summer I saw _Jurassic Park_, and I must say this is the more exciting film
